The seeds are in the stores! Actually they have been in the stores for a while and shopping early is the best way to get the best selection and to guarantee you will get the varieties you want. I can’t help myself when it comes to browsing the seeds wherever I go it is just something I do, something I have always done. It’s almost like watching fireworks, my thoughts go to oohs and ahhs with all the beautiful pictures of vegetables and flowers. The thoughts of running vines and watching the bees pollinate as they fly from blossom to blossom and the future abundance of harvest weather it is throughout the season picking tomatoes, beans and greens or the fall harvest of pumpkins, winter squash and gourds. The feeling is euphoric.

I’ve been slowly picking up packets of seeds as I find ones I know for sure I want. From the tried and true tomatoes and bean varieties I’ve been growing for years now to the new ones I’ve decided to try and see what happens. Trying something new is always both scary and exciting and it usually at least to some level has a sense of satisfaction. One plant I yet to have success with is Brussels Sprouts. Our family love them and I have been trying to successfully grow them for a number of years now. It’s been a slow process and last year I at least got a few. I will try again this year, will keep my fingers crossed and hopefully have plenty to harvest well into next winter. I also keep seeds from organic vegetables I’ve bought at farmers markets to try, kept seeds from plants we grew the previous year and been given seeds by family and friends.
In addition to buying seeds in our local feed/grain/garden center we are also purchasing some from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. I am looking forward to sharing our results of those choices as the season progresses. Kevin for some reason asked me last fall if we could grow a corn field so Interestingly enough the plan is to grow a small, very small, scale corn field. At the very least we should get stalks for fall decorating.

So if you haven’t already thought about it don’t wait too long to figure out what you are going to plant this year and happy seed shopping!
