When Life Interrupts

What do you do when life interrupts the plan? It’s inevitable, it is going to happen. It’s how you deal with it that matters. Some times we just need to get out of our own way. It could be a higher power trying to tell you “Hang on, slow down.” Whatever the plan is, life is still happening all around us. So what does that mean? It simply means instead of dot, dot, dot. You now revert to dash, dash, dash.

We have kids. A small abundance of kids. We have adult kids, we have high school kids and middle school too. We have adult kids that didn’t come into our lives until they were adults but they are still our kids. We have our friends kids, kids. We have kids with autoimmune disease, kids with severe environmental and food allergies, mental health struggles, learning challenges, behavior issues and Parenting is a just a huge part of our lives. Things are going to happen that pull us away from what we “plan” to do. We all have other outside forces in our lives. Extended family, work, community, flat tires, sickness, unexpected meetings, meltdowns, forgotten appointments etc.

Just because your attention has to get pulled away from your plan by no means should abandon those plans. I had big plans on finalizing at least one is not two of my gardens today. Scheduling measurements, clearing, amending soil, layout, plant selection… it was going to be a very productive day. Instead yesterday I was offered additional hours at work (it’s our slow season so yes please.) Mid day yesterday I received a call from one of the kids teachers and now have a mid day meeting with said teacher to try and figure out a plan for success. So, between getting home from work and the meeting there isn’t enough time to accomplish what I had scheduled before the youngest gets home and he requires most of my attention in the afternoon.

How did I choose to react to the wrench thrown in my plan? I am adapting. That is what you have to do there is no way around it. I came home made myself a hearty meal to carry me over til dinner, started my chicken stock, have my seed catalog to make some final decisions before I head out to my meeting, which I pray Kevin can make it to. After I will come back and do the things I can on the list I had scheduled before the day ends. This time of year schedules aren’t as pressing as when it is time to pick or preserve so that is a blessing.

The house smells fabulous, I am still getting things done and I still have a plan. I also had a window of opportunity to sit and write this. WIN WIN! Just remember it is the end goal that is the most important. Keep that in the forefront. Just because you get a flat tire on the road doesn’t mean you don’t fix the tire and keep going so why would you do that with your plan? My measurements can wait until tomorrow. I can sit on the sofa tonight while the kids watch a movie and finalize the seeds I want to order.

We all have our daily lives to live simultaneously to our homesteads. You’ve got this. No worries, it’s Friday enjoy!
