Fall On The Homestead

Spring is the beginning of the garden season and although there are plants that will grow through the winter frost like kale, carrots and some other roots and greens. Fall is the time of year for a scurried amount of prepping for the cold days and nights that will come all to swiftly to the northeast.

Fall is a time of harvesting the “lasts” (that’s what I call them.) The last squash, cucumbers, tomatoes…. you get it. It’s also the time of harvesting the winter squash if you were lucky enough to be blessed with a crop. Our garden was blessed with a few volunteer plants that gave us enough butternut squash to last the entire winter.

In addition to our garden harvest and planning for the winter, the winter months are filled with hearty recipes of soups and stews. All of which are made both healthier and tastier with the addition of homemade bone broths and stocks. We freeze one cup amounts in freezer friendly ball jars.

I look forward to sharing some recipes as we navigate through the fall and winter months.
