One very useful project we are building for the homestead this year is cold frames. With the seemingly endless supply of wood pallets I have come up with plans to use all recycled materials to make cold frames for seed starting as well as hardening off seedlings and growing greens late next fall and throughout the winter. Only the hinges and screws will be new purchases on this project. Everything else, including the labor of course is or was free.

I use Pinterest a lot to look for ways to utilize the resources we have access to. I love to save money where ever I can. Pinterest and YouTube offer so much free information it would be foolish of me to not gobble it all up and come up with my own version of what I want to accomplish with the means I have. The pictures in this post are all from a Pinterest search as well as saved on our Pinterest page here > https://www.pinterest.com/heavinshomestead/cold-frame-ideas/

Over time we have collected old window sashes I can’t remember where from but they have been here a while now just waiting for me to find something to do with them. I’ve actually used them already over small raised beds to warm the soil for germination but I’m hoping for this to be a permanent application.

I’m very excited to get moving on the projects we have planned for this year but I am constantly reminded that I need to be patient. We both still work and have other commitments on top of the homestead. Life moves in other directions and I have to, some days, go with that flow even though I want to fight the current.

As we move closer to building time I will be sure to recap and update on the progress and success of the cold frames. Hopefully some time soon we will also be starting a homestead vlog. That’s a scary prospect right there. lol
