Chicks, Chicks, CHICKS!

I started this post before our little cluckers arrived. They were scheduled to come in the “week of” the 24th and they ended up shipping on the 25th and arrived yesterday. Truth be told no I was not prepared. That is a goal for the future that’s for sure. As soon as I recieved the email they were shipped I got the gears in motion and out of an unused dog crate and a few other things lying around we had a secure brooder waiting for little bodies to warm.

All 18 arrived healthy although quite quiet to my surprise. I got them home and one by one after a quick hello their beak was tapped into the water and they were in their new home in our living room (for the moment)

The starter feed I purchased, an organic, non gmo, non medicated variety was the size of rabbit pellets. To me this was much to big for the little girls to eat so thanks to my handy dandy ninja it was ground up a bit more in no time. They were happy, curious, drinking eating and even scratching fluff balls of happiness. I mean who isn’t made happy by the sight and sound of new baby chicks? I don’t have an area outside the house for a brooder so when we get new chicks they start out in the house. That being said a brooder takes up quite a bit of room and more than a few chicks can sound like an episode of Chicks Gone Wild, Spring Break!

The new baby birds will temporarily live in the house. They will start out in the living room so I can keep an eye on them after which as they get larger and noisier they will move to the basement family room where there is more room. It’s the easiest place to set up an large enough space for them as well as to separate them from our resident predator. (See photo below)

I am happy to say at this point our cat really has no interest in the chicks. She is much more interested in the birds flying outside the window.

Today I have to be outside of the house most of the day so they have fresh mash and water, they are warm enough with the two lights and should be fine for the day. When I get home later, and when the kids get home there will be lots of loving on them. We want our birds to be as friendly as possible so we like to handle them a lot. We have some repairs to do in the old coop before we will be able to move them out there in a few months and we can’t start working on the new coop and run until the weather is warmer and the ground isn’t so frozen. I can’t wait for you to see the plans I have for the new animal area.
