Garden Dreaming!

The garden plans are well underway but require warmer weather as well as a few construction projects and the hauling of soil before any direct planting can be done. I have planned out the raised bed boxes we will be making using pallet wood. It’s still way too early in our growing zone to plant outside so we still have time and honestly it is probably something we will be able to knock out in a weekend but it will likely be two full days. I say a weekend because be will have to pull pallets apart, cut some of the wood to size and then construct the boxes before placing them in their prospective spaces. After that I will work on filling the boxes with garden soil, compost and peat. Once the danger of the last frost has past each box will be able to house 4 mounds. The exact number of boxes we will be making I’m not sure of yet but at the very least it will be 12 and possibly up to 24.

There will be three major garden areas throughout the property and two smaller ones for my herbs. Our original garden space will get the early plantings being that the area has been planted previously so the soil doesn’t need much work other than clean up and a good dose of compost. Peas are one the the first plantings along with the first of the Radishes, Spinach and Swiss Chard.

Another growing area will be in a hoop house we are building this spring with some recycled materials. I’ve been planning this build for a few years now to extend the growing season her in the north east. There are many crops that with some protection will grow throughout the winter or can be started weeks earlier than in an open garden. I am so excited to get this project started but have to remember, one thing at a time until it is complete.

There will also be pot planting and flowers beds as well. I’ve been enjoying watching some Youtube videos of experimental pot plantings so I am excited to try some of the methods. Some of those will be plantings of Carrots, Potatoes, Leek, Onion and Garlic. (Yes I know Garlic usually goes in during the fall but it’s an experiment. Work with me here.) Many of my perennials need to be split and some will be potted and hopefully sold to help defer costs of garden start up.

I’m excited to share when we get more into the construction and planting stages of our gardens.
