Homemade and Healthy

It was on a visit to the St. Louis area about 5 years ago that my middle daughter and I came upon a little shop that sold soaps, scrubs and other delightful indulgences. We were impressed with the knowledge, not to mention the friendliness of the staff who at the time if I recall were the owners. Anyway, we made a few purchases and once back home in New England we loved the products. One particular product was an exfoliating body scrub. I only purchased a small tub and although I could purchase more online, I am not the best when it comes to things like that.

Fast forward to now. Our same middle daughter has been diagnosed with a plethora of environmental and food allergies. People may not realize it but when you have certain allergies and the degree of those allergies they can also effect your skin. Our oldest daughter has Celiac Disease and we learned this with her many years ago. Not only does the food we ingest effect our skin the same is true of the products we put on our skin. Let me tell you, finding gluten free health and beauty products was not an easy feat. Finding gluten free just about anything was a challenge back then. When our middle daughter was diagnosed boy did that make gluten free look easy. This one is allergic to wheat protein, corn, soy and dairy. The challenge her was a mountain compared to the mole hill of gluten.

What things come down to is not only the need but the desire to know exactly what we not only put in our bodies but what we also put on our bodies. With a little searching, she found a recipe to make her own coffee scrub using freshly ground coffee, hand ground in my antique coffee mill daughter #3 and I restored, organic sugar and organic coconut oil. The coarseness of the sugar exfoliates, the coffee is said to reduce the appearance of cellulite and the coconut oil moisturizes. She also added cinnamon and vanilla (homemade) I assume for scent. Basic, whole ingredients, it doesn’t get much simpler than that.
